Periodontal surgery can be used to target areas where regular scaling has not responded and allows our dentist to clean the area more thoroughly by being able to see the areas under gum that are causing the issues.
Periodontal surgery can also be used to regenerate lost bone and gum around teeth.

The gums are then checked again, and if there is persistent gum disease, Sabrina will determine whether you may need further treatment targeting the non-responsive persistent sites. The treatment, known as surgical periodontal therapy, is undertaken when your mouth is numbed – the gum is pulled back and the problematic area treated, and the gum is then stitched back in place.
Sometimes regenerative material can be used to stimulate bone growth.
You will feel numb for a few hours after treatment. Once the anaesthetic has worn off you may notice some tenderness around your gums. This can be settled with anti-inflammatory drugs like paracetamol if necessary but in most cases, patients tolerate the procedure very well. You will have some stitches in the area and you will be given careful aftercare instruction on how to keep the area clean until the stitches a removed a few weeks later.
Although more invasive than non-surgical periodontal treatment, periodontal surgery is not as invasive as it sounds. The treatment can be carried out at the practice using local anaesthetic and you can go home the same day. There can be some discomfort afterwards, however every case is different and your periodontist will explain the aftercare that you require.
By gently lifting the gums away from the teeth, the diseased site can be directly seen, and our dentist will have better access to treat the problem. It makes the site easier for you to maintain at home alongside regular visits to our hygienists and dentists. In some circumstances bone regeneration can be performed.
Like all surgical procedures, our dentists will take a thorough medical and drug history from you to see if you are medically fit before surgery.
You will need to have excellent plaque control before surgery can be performed.
Smoking can inhibit healing following surgery and therefore effect the outcome of treatment, you should therefore quit smoking before having periodontal surgery.
Regeneration is not suitable for all patients as it depends on the pattern of bone loss in your mouth which will be discussed with you by Dr Sabrina if there are any suitable areas in the mouth.
The aim of periodontal regeneration is to increase the chances of you keeping your natural teeth where there has been significant destruction.
Following your consultation, you will be provided with a written estimate of costs for treatment. This is based on the materials or products to be used, and complexity of the procedure. You will always be given clear transparent costs and there will never be any hidden costs or surprise bills!
