About this treatment

Botox is often an effective treatment for excessive sweating. For some people, it drastically improves their quality of life. The injections may be a good option if you don’t respond to other treatments like prescription antiperspirants.

Botox works by blocking the release of a neurotransmitter which binds with your sweat glands to signal the release of sweat.

Normally, your nervous system activates your sweat glands when your body temperature rises to help cool itself. People who have hyperhidrosis have overactive nerves that signal the sweat glands.

When you receive Botox injections directly into the area of your body that commonly sweats, your overactive nerves are blocked. When your nerves can’t signal your sweat glands, you don’t sweat.

How effective is Botox for excessive sweating in the armpit region?

Botox is licensed for use of treatment for excessive sweating. It can achieve up to 90% reduction of sweating in this area.

Does it hurt?

Botox is injected just below the surface of the skin using a fine needle. You will receive around 20 tiny injection points around each armpit where the sweat glands are found. A topical anesthetic will help reduce any initial discomfort and ice packs can also be helpful. The area may feel tender for a day or so afterwards.

What can I expect after treatment?

The treatment should have no discomfort afterwards. Some swelling and redness is normal and expected for a few hours after the treatment. You can resume your normal activities immediately after receiving Botox injections. It takes 2 weeks for the injections to take full effect.
