Dental fillings are used to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay, wear, or trauma.
When a cavity forms due to tooth decay, the decayed part of the tooth is removed, and the empty space is filled with a filling material to restore the tooth’s function, integrity, and shape.

Local anaesthetic
The process to getting a filling starts with a diagnosis following your thorough examination and sometimes x-rays are needed to confirm presence of decay in hard to see areas. Local anaesthetic may be given to numb the area. The decayed tooth material is removed. The area is cleaned and prepared. The chosen material is shaped and hardened. Bite is checked and the filling is smoothed and polished.
Dental fillings are one of the most common and effective ways to treat cavities and keep your teeth functional and healthy.
You may be experiencing toothache or sensitivity (especially to hot, cold, or sweet). You may see visible holes or dark spots on your teeth or have food getting stuck in the same spot. A chipped or broken tooth may require a filling, or even rough or jagged edges you may feel inside your mouth can be sorted with a filling

The lifespan of a dental filling depends on the type of material used, the location in the mouth, your oral hygiene habits, and how much bite pressure the filling is subjected to.
Filling longevity is effected by good oral hygiene. This includes regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups. Heavy bite forces from grinding or clenching (bruxism) can wear down or crack fillings. A diet high in sugary, acidic, or hard foods can weaken the restoration.
Larger fillings may require maintenance over time or weaken the residual structure over time.
If you experience pain or sensitivity around the filled tooth, this may indicate it needs replacing. If the dentist notices visible cracks, of you feel any chips, or roughness or if the filling falls out or becomes loose this will mean the filling needs replacing. Othe indications are if the filling gets staining or discoloration or an X-ray shows decay under or around the filling.
Following your consultation, you will be provided with a written estimate of costs for treatment. This is based on the materials or products to be used, and complexity of the procedure. You will always be given clear transparent costs and there will never be any hidden costs or surprise bills!
