A gum lift, also known as gum contouring or gingival sculpting, is a cosmetic dental procedure that reshapes the gum line to improve the appearance of a smile.
It involves removing or reshaping excess gum tissue to create a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing gum line, often addressing a “gummy smile”. It can also be done to create more room to place dental restorations (crown lengthening) such as crowns in severely broken down teeth.

Thank you to our patients for allowing us to share their amazing outcomes at Geans Clinic.
By making sure to properly care for the teeth and gums following the procedure, most patients can enjoy the results permanently without requiring any follow-up care or repeated surgery.
Dr Parmar will discuss all options to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. A local anaesthetic will be given to ensure you will not feel anything. If you’re interested in sedation, be sure to discuss this with us during your initial consultation. Once you’re comfortable, Dr Parmar will plan the contour of the new gum line based on prerecorded measurements taken at your consultation.
The excess gum tissue is removed using either a scalpel and in some cases very small amounts of bone around each tooth, if necessary. (Not everyone needs this step; it depends on your unique tooth anatomy.) Dr Parmar will then shape the remaining gum tissue to give you a more balanced, uniform look. You will have some stitches placed to hold everything in place and allow for good healing.
You will be given all aftercare instructions and analgesia before you leave.
The initial healing following a gum lift will take around two weeks or less for most people. You will be invited back after two weeks to remove stitches and review the healing with Dr Parmar. Your recovery timeline depends on several factors, including how many teeth need treatment and your body’s own healing capacity.
In most cases, you’ll need to wait about eight to 12 weeks for full healing. If bone has been removed, full healing will take 6 months before definitive cosmetic restorative work can be done.
At Geans Clinic, you will be treated by Dr Parmar who has over 15 years of periodontal surgical experience, so you are in very safe hands!
Most importantly, you should never have gum contouring or any other cosmetic dental procedure if you have existing decay or gum disease. Smoking and certain other medical conditions can impact healing and contraindicate gum lift surgery. To learn more about your treatment options, schedule a consultation with Dr Parmar to find out your options.
Following your consultation, you will be provided with a written estimate of costs for treatment. This is based on the materials or products to be used, and complexity of the procedure. You will always be given clear transparent costs and there will never be any hidden costs or surprise bills!
