The treatments are prescribed based on comprehensive Gum Assessments which identify early signs of disease before they cause lasting damage. Every patient receives personalised guidance based on their genetic, social, and personal risk factors for gum disease.
Our team follows the latest scientific research to manage and treat gum disease effectively.
The first phase of treatment involves removing bacteria (in the form of plaque and calculus) from periodontal pockets by deep cleaning or scaling the root surface. This is usually done under a local anaesthetic and can be split over a few sessions.
In aggressive forms of the disease, antibiotics may be used to complement this therapy.
Advanced disease sometimes calls for a second phase of treatment. This involves creating access to these deep periodontal pockets by periodontal surgery. Sometimes localised application of periodontal regenerative materials are used.
When active treatment ends, the disease should be stable.
This is when the third phase of treatment or the maintenance (or supportive) phase begins. This is a fundamental stage in periodontal therapy and the only way to achieve control of periodontitis in the long term. This is normally performed on a three or four monthly basis by our hygienists.
The dental hygienist will carry out a thorough reassessment to evaluate your oral health. This involves analysis of plaque and bleeding levels; and individualised therapy adjusted to the needs of each patient.
At Geans Clinic, we believe in a different approach—one that focuses on prevention rather than just treatment.
Our dentists and hygienists work together to screen all our patients—including children—for early signs of gum disease. We don’t just treat problems when they arise; we proactively help you prevent them.
We monitor your gum health regularly, ensuring any issues are caught before they become serious.
Historically, it was believed that the accumulation of plaque (due to poor oral hygiene) was sufficient to initiate periodontitis in all individuals.
However, people are resistant to getting periodontitis even if their oral hygiene is poor. Some patients are highly susceptible and will develop the disease even with quite good oral hygiene and most of the remainder will develop the disease eventually (by 65 years of age) if they have average oral hygiene.
Susceptible patients develop the disease because their immune system over-reacts to the presence of plaque at the gum margin and especially between the teeth. These patients are “at risk” of early tooth loss because they possess or have been exposed to “risk factors”.
The phases of treatment described above are very effective in achieving periodontal health, but bacteria tend to recolonise periodontal pockets and if preventive measures are not taken, the disease reappears some months later.
Persistent bad breath is often caused by oral bacteria that produce volatile sulphur compounds. Because gum disease and halitosis are closely linked, improving gum health significantly reduces bacteria build up helping you regain fresh breath and confidence.
Dental implants require special care to prevent Peri-implant Disease, a condition similar to gum disease that can shorten the life of your implants. Our hygienists use state-of-the-art techniques, including Guided Biofilm Therapy, to keep your implants and natural teeth in top condition.
Plaque (Biofilm) build up within hours after brushing and calculus (tartar) buildup is the calcified version which cannot be removed by brushing. This traps more plaque which can increase the progression of gum disease and cause tooth loss. Regular cleans every 3, 4, or 6 months keeps your teeth and gums healthy and free from harmful deposits that contain disease inducing bacteria.
Periodontitis cannot be cured, but it can be stopped and held at bay so that you can keep your teeth for life. The most important thing you can do is to learn how to achieve the highest standard of oral hygiene possible.
Like diabetes patients have to measure their blood glucose levels and be careful what with their diet, you have to monitor your plaque levels and be careful with your oral hygiene.
No matter what we do for you, unless you are cleaning meticulously and conscientiously on a daily basis at home, our treatment will fail. It is also important you are attending for regular check-ups with your dentist so that we can identify and treat “flare-ups” of the disease quickly.
The hygienist plays a vital role in maintaining your gum health in the future. Once treatment has been completed it may be recommended that you see the hygienist on a regular basis to maintain your oral health, the hygienist also checks for deep gum pockets and will alert your dentist should further treatment be required.
Following your consultation, you will be provided with a written estimate of costs for treatment. This is based on the materials or products to be used, and complexity of the procedure. You will always be given clear transparent costs and there will never be any hidden costs or surprise bills!
