About this treatment

At Geans Clinic, we offer a range of evidence-based gum treatments to halt the progress of gum disease, strengthen your teeth’s support system, and protect your smile for the future. The dentist and hygienist will carefully take measurments around your gums identifying areas where the gums are inflamed, bleeding, and where they have deepened due to bone loss.

When gum disease has been diagnosed, usually the first line of treatment will be non-surgical periodontal treatment which involves scaling. Scaling is when plaque and calculus above and below the gumline is professionally removed, all the way down to the bottom of the infected gum pocket. Local anaesthetic is usually administered for your comfort and to allow us to clean effectively to the base of the pocket where your toothbrush can not reach.

Depending on how many teeth in your mouth are affected, you may require several visits to allow us to numb sections of your mouth to carry out the treatment.

FAQs

What can I expect after treatment?

You will feel numb for a few hours after treatment. Once the anaesthetic has worn off you may notice some bleeding and tenderness around your gums. This can be settled with anti-inflammatory drugs like paracetamol if necessary but in most cases, patients tolerate the procedure very well.

What are the long term effects after this treatment?

As a consequence of the removal of the bacteria and calculus, the inflamed gums will start to heal. Your gums will start to look less red, puffy and sore. There will be less bleeding when you brush your teeth and the pockets will ‘tighten’ up, which can make your teeth feel a little more sensitive to cold foods and drinks. This can be easily managed by using a desensitising toothpaste twice a day. In some cases, your gums may recede slightly if the pockets are very deep.

How will I know the treatment has worked?

Provided you closely follow the aftercare and oral hygiene instructions given to you, you will notice a reduction in bleeding, and improvement in your breath, appearance and reduction in swelling of your gums. The dentist or hygienist will recall you after a few weeks to repeat the careful gum measurements to see how much improvement has been made.
