At Geans Clinic we believe prevention is better than cure and prevention isn’t just about cleanings—it’s about building strong, healthy habits and catching small issues before they become big ones.
Caring for your dental implants to ensure long-term success.
Implant maintenance refers to the ongoing care and professional monitoring required to keep dental implants healthy and functioning for the long term. While implants don’t decay like natural teeth, they can still develop complications—especially in the surrounding gums and bone.

Implant maintenance will prevent peri-implant disease (gum inflammation and bone loss around implants). It also maintains healthy gum tissue and bone support surrounding the implants and preserves the function and aesthetics of the implant and restoration. These visits will also detect mechanical issues early (loose crowns, fractures, etc.) and therefore support implant longevity — implants can last decades with good care.
Implant maintenance involves regular dental hygiene visits (typically every 3–6 months). Our highly experienced hygienists will make a thorough assessment of soft tissue health and perform plaque/tartar removal using our state of the art Airflow device. Studies have shown the use of the Airflow as highly beneficial in cleaning the implant surface and underneath the gums.
Alongside careful monitoring with our dentists using x-rays, our hygienists complement this by checking for early signs of mobility, inflammation, or signs of peri-implantitis
Our hygienists will provide you with a tailored home care plan based on the number of implants you have, their position in your mouth and the type of prosthesis the implant supports.
It is essential you brush twice daily using an electric brush. At Geans Clinic, we recommend the use of implant-specific floss and interdental brushes. You will be shown how to clean around the crown, abutment, and gumline carefully. It is important to use non-abrasive toothpaste and avoid harsh scrubbing. In some cases antibacterial mouth rinses may be recommended.
between 30-45 minutes depending on how long the hygienist feels will benefit you on a case by case basis. The interval between visits can be from 3-6 months dependent on individual risk factors.
It is essential you treat implants with the same (or greater) care as natural teeth. Never skip hygiene appointments—routine checks are critical. Make sure to report any bleeding, pain, or swelling around implants promptly. Avoid smoking—this increases the risk of implant failure. Make sure to wear any night guards or bite protective appliances as instructed to prevent excessive forces being placed on your implants.
Following your consultation, you will be provided with a written estimate of costs for treatment. This is based on the materials or products to be used, and complexity of the procedure. You will always be given clear transparent costs and there will never be any hidden costs or surprise bills!
