A dental extraction is the process of removing a tooth from its socket in the bone.
This may be done for a variety of reasons, including severe tooth decay, infection, crowding, or other dental issues. While it may sound a bit scary, dental extractions are common, and at Geans Clinic we are fortunate to have our highly experienced, and gentle Consultant Oral Surgeon, Dr Shrina Nathwani, who will make sure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure.

30-60 minutes
Removal of teeth that are infected or not restorable
Minimal however in complex removal may require 5-7 days
Local or Intravenous sedation
Before the extraction, your dentist will numb the area around the tooth. For more complex extractions (like wisdom teeth), you may be given a sedative orally or intravenously to help you relax.
The dentist will gently loosen the tooth and remove it. If the tooth is broken or has multiple roots, the procedure might take a little longer.
Once the tooth is removed, the dentist will give you instructions on how to care for the extraction site to prevent infection and ensure proper healing.
You might experience some bleeding after the extraction. Bite gently on a gauze pad to help stop the bleeding.
Some discomfort or swelling is normal after a tooth extraction. Your dentist may recommend pain relievers or prescribe something stronger if needed.
For the first 24 hours, avoid sucking motions (like drinking through a straw), spitting forcefully, and smoking, as these can dislodge the clot that helps the healing process.
Stick to soft, cool foods for a few days. Avoid anything hot, crunchy, or hard that might irritate the extraction site.
You may need to return to the dentist for a follow-up visit to make sure everything is healing properly.
Most people can return to their normal routine after a few days. However, you may need to rest and take it easy for the first 24 hours to allow the site to heal. Your dentist will give you guidelines on when it’s safe to resume normal activities.
Yes! If the extracted tooth was important for your smile or function (like chewing), our dentists and multidisciplinary team have many options available for replacing it, such as a orthodontics, dental implant, bridge, or dentures.
