Geans Clinic - About Dental Implants
About this treatment

Dental implants are a strong, long-lasting solution to help restore your smile.

A dental implant is a small metal post, usually made of titanium, that a dental implant surgeon places into your jawbone. This post acts like a root for a replacement tooth. Once the implant has had time to heal and bond with your bone (a process called osseointegration), a custom-made crown (the part that looks like a tooth) is attached to the top. The result is a replacement tooth that looks, feels, and functions just like a natural one.

Dental implant treatment usually takes place over several months, depending on your individual needs. Here’s a step-by-step overview:

1. Initial Consultation & Assessment

Your journey starts with a consultation with your dental implant surgeon. What to expect:

  • Review of your dental and medical history
  • X-rays or 3D scans to assess your jawbone and plan treatment
  • Discussion of your goals and treatment options
  • A personalised treatment plan

Important: Healthy gums and enough jawbone are essential for successful implants. If needed, bone grafting may be recommended (see below).

2. Tooth Extraction (if needed)

If you have a damaged or decayed tooth that needs replacing, it will be gently removed before the implant process begins.

3. Bone Grafting (only if necessary)

If your jawbone isn’t thick or strong enough to hold an implant, a bone graft may be needed.

What this means:

  • A small amount of bone (from your body, bovine/porcine sourced or synthetic material) is added to your jaw
  • Healing time varies—typically 3 to 6 months before placing the implant or can heal at the same time as implant integration if placed together.

4. Implant Placement (Surgery)

This is a minor surgical procedure done under local anesthesia +/- sedation.

What happens:

  • A small incision is made in your gum
  • The implant (a titanium post) is placed into the jawbone
  • Healing time: 3 to 6 months for the implant to fuse with your jawbone (osseointegration)

5. Abutment Placement

Once the implant has healed and bonded to the bone, an abutment (a connector) is placed on top of the implant. Sometimes this is done at the same time as the implant. The gum will need a couple of weeks to heal around the abutment before placing the crown.

6. Crown Placement (The New Tooth)

Finally, a custom-made crown (artificial tooth) is attached to the abutment. It is designed to match your natural teeth in color, shape, and size.

Variations may include:

  • Single crown (for one tooth)
  • Bridge (for several teeth)
  • Implant-supported denture (for many missing teeth)

FAQs

  • Natural look and feel: They blend in with your other teeth and are very comfortable.
  • Strong and stable: They allow you to bite and chew normally.
  • Long-lasting: With good care, implants can last many years with good home care and professional maintenance.
  • Maintain your jawbone: Unlike dentures, implants can help keep your jawbone healthy by stimulating it during day to day use.
  • No impact on other teeth: Implants don’t rely on neighboring teeth for support.
  • Dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or even support full dentures. The process does take time and usually involves several visits, but many patients say it’s well worth it for the comfort and confidence implants provide.
  • Brush and floss/interdental clean daily
  • Attend regular dental checkups and cleanings
  • Avoid smoking (it can affect healing and long-term success)
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste
  • Fixed and secure
  • No slipping or clicking like dentures
  • Can maintain jawbone
  • Improves chewing, speech, and confidence
  • Infection at the implant site
  • Nerve or sinus damage
  • Implant not bonding with the bone (may require replacement)
  • Your dentist will guide you closely and monitor your healing at each stage to minimise risks.

We as a family have been coming to this dentist since it opened. I cannot stress how professional and caring they all are. I myself am a nervous patient and they put me at ease every single time. My son has unfortunately had to have root canal treatment not something anyone likes to endure but they were so careful, gentle and professional that my son wasn’t worried, scared or in pain (he fell asleep). I love this dentist, and recommend you to everyone. Sabrina is AMAZING, such a lovely person.

Both my wife and I have been in to see you for a few different treatments and on every single occasion we have left feeling happy and confident with the work you have done. My wife was extremely nervous about having any work done but after having the first consultation with you she came away and immediately felt relaxed about seeing you again to begin the treatments. After the experience we’ve had with you I no longer dread having to book in for a check up!

Will you please pass my thanks to Shrina Nathwani for her wonderful, professional care when I had a tooth extracted… I had been dreading the procedure but Shrina made me feel so relaxed and I must say I felt no discomfort. Shrina and the dental nurse who assisted her are a definite asset to your practice.

Anon 1, October 2018

I had excellent service from Shrina, not even any swelling or bleeding after the extraction last week. It’s just such a relief to have this sorted. Thank you for your prompt action.
