Gaps / Lost Teeth

A gap in your mouth—whether it's due to a missing tooth or a natural space between teeth (called a diastema)—can affect your smile, chewing ability, confidence, and even your oral health over time.

Geans Clinic - Gaps - Lost Teeth Concern Details
About this concern

You may have a missing tooth due to decay, trauma, gum disease, etc. which leaves a physical gap. Other reasons for a gap is because teeth may shift over time, worsening the gap and affecting your bite.

Some people are born with extra space between certain teeth (diastema), often between the front teeth. This can be genetic or due to a mismatch between tooth and jaw size. Gum disease can cause bone loss resulting in gum recession or bone shrinkage which can cause teeth to loosen or move, creating spaces.

Small teeth or misshaped teeth can leave extra space even when the arch is full.

Depending on the reason for the gap, our clinicians and specialists at Geans Clinic can offer a variety of solutions. The common options to replace a gap are:

1. Dental Implants

Best for: Permanent replacement of a missing tooth

  • Titanium post replaces the root; a crown is placed on top.
  • Looks and functions like a natural tooth.
  • Prevents bone loss in the area.

✓ Permanent
✓ No effect on adjacent teeth
✗ Requires surgery and adequate bone

2. Dental Bridges

Best for: Filling a gap between teeth using neighbouring teeth as anchors

  • A false tooth (pontic) is suspended between two crowns.
  • Fixed, non-removable option.

✓ Quick and cost-effective
✓ Looks natural
✗ Involves trimming adjacent teeth

3. Dentures / Partial Dentures

Best for: Multiple missing teeth or budget-conscious patients

  • Removable appliance that replaces one or more teeth.
  • Acrylic or metal options available.

✓ Affordable
✓ Non-invasive
✗ May move during function
✗ Needs daily removal and cleaning

4. Orthodontics (Braces or Aligners)

Best for: Natural gaps between teeth (diastema) or spacing issues

  • Braces or Invisalign can gradually move teeth to close the gap.
  • Often combined with retainers to maintain results.

✓ Natural tooth preservation
✓ Suitable for younger or adult patients
✗ Time-consuming

5. Cosmetic Bonding or Veneers

Best for: Small gaps or cosmetic improvements

  • Composite material or porcelain is shaped over the teeth to close the space.
  • Quick, minimally invasive.

✓ Fast and aesthetic
✓ No surgery
✗ Less durable than implants or bridges (esp. bonding)
