Being nervous to see the dentist or dental anxiety is a feeling of fear, stress, or unease related to visiting the dentist. It’s very common, affecting both children and adults, and ranges from mild nervousness to severe dental phobia that leads people to avoid dental visits or treatment altogether.
Delayed treatment of small issues can eventually become big problems leading to more complicated, costly treatments. There is an increased risk of tooth decay, gum disease, or tooth loss resulting in dental emergencies. Some patients have lower self-confidence due to poor oral health or aesthetics.
At Geans Clinic we are extremely experienced in seeing nervous dental patients and have successfully helped many go on to receive dental treatment and routine visits, overcoming their fears.
All Geans Clinic staff, from the reception to clinical team, will treat you with the gentleness and calmness you deserve, and you will be given full control of dental procedures and options to help calm your nerves. Just make sure to tell us ahead of your visit so we can put everything place to ensure your visit is as smooth as possible.
Let our team know about your fears—we’re here to help, not judge. Make sure to ask questions and discuss your treatment plan so you know what to expect. We always agree on hand signals to pause if you feel overwhelmed or just need a break.
Geans Clinic uses numbing gels, pain-free injection techniques, and air polishing which have all been proved to increase comfort and acceptance of dental work. We can stage your appointments to build comfort and confidence.
Trying to practice deep breathing or guided meditation before and during treatment can help. We have television screens above our dental chair which have proved to be a fantastic distraction and enjoyed by all patients. We encourage patients to bring headphones and listen to music or a calming podcast during treatment. we offer patients stress-relief tools like stress balls which also form a great distraction.
IV sedation for more complex or lengthy procedures is a great, safe technique to help patients accept certain treatments. The benefit of this procedure is its relatively short acting anaesthesia with an amnesic effect meaning patients have little to no recollection of the procedure.
Geans Clinic is a child-friendly environment, we use tell-show-do techniques, and positive reinforcement. We encourage dental visits from a very young age to build familiarisation and to build trust gradually.
Everyone on our team, from our practice manager to our hygienists, works towards making your visit comfortable, caring and personal.
