Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are a common sign of gum inflammation or disease and shouldn’t be ignored.

While occasional bleeding (e.g., after brushing too hard) may not be serious, persistent or frequent bleeding is often a warning sign of an underlying issue.

About this concern

At Geans Clinic we offer personalised gum health assessments, professional cleanings, and gum disease treatments.

If you’re concerned about bleeding gums, our hygienists work closely with our dentists to help support you and improve your gum health. Alongside the periodontal expertise of Dr Sabrina Parmar, we can help determine the cause of the bleeding and provide a tailored care plan to get your gum health back on track.

Bleeding gums can be caused by:

  • Gum disease (gingivitis & periodontitis) is characterised by red, swollen, tender gums that bleed easily, cause bad breath and receding gums. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, caused by plaque buildup at the gumline. If untreated, it can progress to Periodontitis, a more serious condition that damages the bone supporting your teeth.
  • Poor oral hygiene will cause gums to bleed. Infrequent brushing and flossing allow plaque and tartar to build up. This buildup irritates the gums and leads to inflammation and bleeding.
  • Hormonal changes such as pregnancy, menstruation, menopause, and puberty can make gums more sensitive and prone to bleeding due to hormonal fluctuations.
  • Vitamin deficiencies such as Vitamin C and Vitamin K deficiencies can make your gums more likely to bleed. A poor diet low high in refined carbohydrates and sugar may also impact your immune system and gum health.
  • Certain medications such as blood thinners, blood pressure medications, and some anti-seizure or immunosuppressant drugs may cause or worsen bleeding gums.
  • Smoking, vaping or tobacco use irritates gum tissue and reduces blood flow, which can worsen gum disease and delay healing.
  • Systemic health conditions like diabetes, leukaemia, and certain autoimmune diseases can increase the risk of gum problems.
