About this concern

Tooth sensitivity, also called dentine hypersensitivity, is a common dental condition where the teeth react with pain or discomfort to certain stimuli, usually hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks, or even brushing.

What does it feel like?

  • A short, sharp pain that comes on suddenly
  • Discomfort in one tooth or several
  • Triggered by temperature changes, sweets, touch, or even cold air

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the protective enamel (on the crown) is worn away or the gums recede, exposing the dentine underneath. Dentine contains tiny tubules that connect to the nerve inside the tooth, making it more reactive to stimuli.

Common causes include:

  • Worn enamel from aggressive brushing or abrasive toothpaste
  • Gum recession, often from gum disease or hard brushing
  • Tooth grinding (bruxism) that wears down enamel
  • Tooth decay or cavities
  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Worn fillings or leaking dental work
  • Recent dental procedures (temporary sensitivity after whitening, cleanings, or fillings)
  • Acidic diet (citrus, wine, vinegar, etc.)

How is tooth sensitivity treated?

At-home Solutions:

  • Use a desensitising toothpaste (e.g., Sensodyne)
  • Switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Avoid acidic or overly hot/cold foods and drinks
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash to strengthen enamel

How Geans Clinic can help

  • Fluoride varnish can be applied to protect exposed areas
  • Desensitising agents or sealants can be applied to the dentine
  • Dental restorations for worn or damaged areas, or repairing or replacing failing restorations
  • Root canal treatment if sensitivity is severe and persistent
  • Regular check-ups and Hygiene treatment to prevent and intervene early
