Fine lines are shallow, surface-level creases and are often the earliest signs of aging. They typically appear in your late 20s to 30s, and particularly in patients who have experienced a lot of sun exposure. They are most common around the eyes (crow’s feet), mouth (smile lines), and forehead.
Fine lines can go on to form wrinkles which are deeper folds or creases in the skin and develop over time as fine lines become more pronounced. They are associated with loss of collagen, skin thinning, and muscle movement.
Natural aging is accompanied by a decline in collagen and elastin production in the skin. Age is also associated with slower cell turnover and less natural hydration.
Repeated facial expressions like smiling, frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause dynamic lines that become static wrinkles over time.
One of the main causes of early fine lines is sun exposure, also known as photoaging, and is caused by UV rays that break down skin fibres, leading to premature aging.
Lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol, poor diet, and lack of sleep accelerate skin aging. Stress and pollution also contribute.
Dehydration causes dry or poorly hydrated skin which looks more lined and dull.
Geans Clinic offers a variety of solutions to help treat and minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Complimentary to our treatments we recommend introducing a few simple daily habits to maintain youthful skin.
