About this concern

When to See a Dentist

If bad breath is persistent despite good oral hygiene, it’s important to consult a dentist. They can check for underlying dental issues and refer you to a specialist if needed.

What Causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath can be caused by a range of factors, including:

Poor Oral Hygiene

Bacteria buildup on the teeth, gums, and tongue can produce foul-smelling compounds. Plaque is a build up of this bacteria and can stick to the teeth and solidify, also known as calculus or tartar accumulation. This is a major contributor to gum disease, which is a source of bad breath. Food debris left in the mouth also encourages bacterial growth leading to bad breath.

Diet

Strong-smelling foods like garlic, onions, and spices can cause temporary bad breath. Diets low in carbs can lead to ketone production, which causes a fruity or acetone-like smell.

Tongue Coating

A coated tongue is caused by a build up of bacteria and dead cells which leads to bad breath. Tongue cleaning is especially important to help prevent this. Our hygienists can direct you on how to how to do this and what products you can use.

Gum Disease (Gingivitis and Periodontitis)

Infections in the gums produce a persistent foul odour due to the breakdown of tissues and bacteria.

Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

Saliva helps cleanse the mouth. When saliva flow is reduced (due to dehydration, medications, or mouth breathing), odour-causing substances can build up.

Medical Conditions

Conditions like sinus infections, tonsillitis, diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and liver or kidney issues can contribute to bad breath.

Smoking and Tobacco Use

Tobacco dries out the mouth and leaves lingering odours. It also contributes to gum disease, which exacerbates bad breath.
