Periodontal maintenance, also known as supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) is for everyone essentially to keep your gums in good health. Think of it like a service plan for your gums—regular, focused care to stop any signs of trouble before they become serious again.

For those patients who have been treated for periodontal (gum) disease, Geans Clinic follow a specialised dental cleaning regimen. It’s a critical part of long-term management and prevention of further disease progression after initial therapy, such as scaling and root planing or periodontal surgery.

About this treatment

A periodontal maintenance appointment typically includes:

Deep cleaning below the gumline using Geans Clinic advanced Airflow machine. This provides our patients with a comfortable and highly effective way of removing plaque biofilm around teeth and implants.

Removal of plaque and calculus from root surfaces
Pocket measurement to monitor gum attachment
Review of home care routines and personalised oral hygiene advice
X-rays if needed to assess bone levels or disease progression

It’s often more thorough than a standard scale and polish.

Why Is It Necessary?

Once someone has been diagnosed with periodontitis, they are a periodontitis patient for life meaning they’re at lifelong risk for recurrence. Regular cleanings alone (like those given in routine check-ups) are not sufficient to manage this risk.

Periodontal maintenance with our hygienists helps to:

Control bacterial levels below the gumline
Prevent inflammation and reinfection
Monitor gum health and attachment levels
Identify and treat problem areas early

How Often Is It Needed?

Most periodontitis patients need maintenance every 3 to 4 months, depending on:

Severity of previous disease
Stability of current gum condition
Oral hygiene habits
Risk factors (e.g., smoking, diabetes)

Our dentists and hygienists will tailor the schedule to your specific needs.

For patients without periodontitis or those with periodontitis risk factors such as diabetics, smokers, heart disease patients, six monthly maintenance visits will ensure good health and target areas where disease can start

What are the benefits of Periodontal Maintenance?

Regular maintenance keeps your gums healthy and bone levels stable. In those with risk factors such as diabetics and smokers, it reduces the risk of tooth loss. Many studies now support that good gum health helps protect systemic health (gum disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, Alzheimer’s.)

A regular SPT protocol will support long-term implant success in treated patients.
